Today is Malawi Independence Day. On July 6, 1964, Malawi became an independent country. Before this it was a British protectorate referred to as Nyasaland.
I thought it would be nice to make an app celebrating a country who far more recently broke free from British colonial tyranny than another country that did several days ago.
I learned a lot producing this map. I hope others do too. It’s a map of historic and important figures in the Malawi independence movement and the independent state post-independence. Though the list is not exhaustive, and omissions are inevitable, the dataset includes 60 important people over the past 60 or so years.
I created the dataset with Spatial Dataset Doctor GPT. Then designed the map with Web Mapper.
