As a continuous government, the country that celebrated its independence yesterday is fairly old. But not as old as Isle of Man! Not even close.
Tynwald Day is July 5th. Tynwald Day is the Isle of Man’s national day, marking the annual open-air sitting of the Manx Parliament at Tynwald Hill in St. John’s.
It’s a centuries-old tradition rooted in Norse custom, making it the site of the longest unbroken parliament in the world.
Admittedly, I did not know much about it before I saw it on the list this week, but I thought it would be good to spread the love among the different independence days this week. And this one is epic – over 1000 continuous years of parliament and going!
I used the Sanborn Fire Insurance map design schema from the Prompt Cartography website for this map.
I also had GIS Data Doctor write a turbooverpass-eu query to grab all the non-residential building footprints on the island to see how it would style them. You can turn those on in the Layers panel. Admittedly, this map is a little simple. It was more about experimenting a bit with data hunting and scraping while I hide in my garage under a barrage of fireworks going off. 🙂
