The world has a lot of refugees.
The world is also full of many great refugee maps already.
Since today’s map is merely part of a daily map challenge, I’m going to admit this, straight-up:
If you are really interested in studying international refugees, you shouldn’t view this map instead of many others. I have embedded my personal favorite refugee visual analysis and map story at the end of this post.
However, again, the fact that I was able to prompt GIS Dataset Doctor find and create the python necessary to scrape exactly the data and fields I wanted from numerous datasets, and then merge them into a single GIS dataset, without the use of any GIS or data-management tools, was liberating. Yes, it required prompting, but nothing earth shattering and also no coding or esoteric GIS/data science verbiage.
I then had Web Mapper produce this in about eight minutes. I asked it to revise one bad map placement quirk and fix the pop-ups so they show up near the country the user clicked on. It fixed the map placement quirk but the pop-ups are still kind of far away. (Pop-ups in zoomable projections with D3 are always a bit wonky, though.) I’m off to a family reunion, however, and since the pop-ups are working, I decided to leave well-enough alone. If this were my day job, I would polish this up within the hour. Alas… this is pure proof-of-concept.
Out of the 365 Days of Maps – this one isn’t that memorable. But it’s done, and it’s “good enough.” And it’s a day worth commemorating, as compared to tomorrow’s which seems a bit more dubious. 🙂

– those who have arrived in countries (i.e., refugees in, fairly recent dataset)
– internal displacement (i.e., refugees who have been forced to move within a country, fairly recent dataset)
– list of contemporary issues (tag-like) causing human migration in that particular country, regardless of type
– total population of country (fairly recent)
– government type in country (generic, basic description, tag-like)
Please find this information and data, and create a CSV dataset for me, that also includes ISO3 country abbreviations, informal Country name in a field, and a single field providing a list of reliability scores for each of the refugee numbers you find for a given country.
If a country literally has no information for any of the refugee values, just mark it null. Don’t make it up. Thanks!

One of the best cartographic explorations of global refugees I have ever come across is by the talented writer (and visual storyteller) Vicki Lynn Cove.
She used ArcGIS Insights (RIP) and ArcGIS StoryMaps to create some really cool interactive data visualizations and link maps back in the day, including the one below.
Hurry, though, as ArcGIS Insights has been deprecated. So I don’t think it will work in another few weeks. 🙁
