In the end I had to actually spell out the precise labels to include which seems to be the only good way to get it to not write gobbledegook. I also had to emphasise the importance of not positioning the legend across any of the landmasses. The first iteration had it covering much of South America. Once it had corrected the legend it covered more of the landmass!
